Soil Remediation Wollongong

Testing, treating, and removing contaminated soil to safely utilise it in the future

If you are planning a new construction, residential or commercial, and need to ensure the soil is suitable, our team can assist with the evaluation, management and remediation of the site. Our team are experienced, licensed and insured.

Why Soil Remediation Matters

If you have contaminated soil, it can have a negative impact on health and prevent projects from being approved to go forward. Typically, contaminated soil can come from old fuel stations, old buildings with asbestos, or former industrial sites that weren’t properly cleared in the past.

Soil remediation requires professional inspection, management and removal. This requires a professional and experienced team. Once completed, you will be issued a certificate stating that your soil/land is safe to build on.

Why Choose Us?

Local experience with contaminated sites

We understand the typical contamination problems at sites in the Wollongong and Illawarra areas, ranging from old service stations or workshops to fills containing asbestos.

Clear testing and reports

We coordinate soil testing with qualified labs and then explain the results in simple terms. You’ll know what’s been discovered, where it’s found, and what cleanup actions are required.

Remedial measures

We, along with the environmental consultants and your project team, determine the remedy that is safe and feasible. Remedies can include excavation, disposal, on-site management, or point treatments based on the type of contamination.

Support from the Council

Often, the remediation activity will relate to a “Remediation Action Plan” and a “validation report for council.” We ensure strong coordination among the consultants to ensure that “the physical works align with the plan, and the final sign-off goes as expected.”

Responsible disposal and tracking

The contaminated soil will be handled and transferred only to authorised treatment facilities that accept it. You get records of waste tracking and disposal receipts with your handover documents.

Soil Remediation Services

Site investigation and soil tests

Our provision of site access and excavation for test pits and sampling assists environmental consultants. These tests identify contaminants and pollution in soil samples for hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and asbestos, and also help determine their location on your site.

Residential Soil Remediation

Many housing blocks also harbour contamination sites, which in some cases will be related to rubble piles, old fuel tanks, and/or asbestos in fill. We will remove contaminated soil, cart it to appropriate disposal sites, and fill the sites with clean fill, rendering the housing blocks ready for construction and or landscaping.

Commercial and industrial remediation

In the case of larger and more complex projects, we agree with the remediation scheme proposed in the report prepared by the environmental consultant. Staged excavation, soil segregation according to contamination levels, and the careful management of existing structures and services are some of the remediation measures proposed.

Asbestos in soil

Handling asbestos-contaminated soil also requires careful attention. Excavation, piling, wrapping, and removal of asbestos-contaminated soil are carried out under strict controls. The process is carried out in accordance with the remediation scheme and Asbestos procedures to verify the area’s validity upon completion.

On Site Management and Capping

In other situations, contamination could be contained at the site without necessarily removing it totally from the land or soil. We design a cap layer or barrier, per your design, with the environmental consultant to ensure contamination is contained and the land is safe to use.

Site Reinstatement and Preparation

After the contaminated soil has been removed or contained, we reestablish the land with clean fill, compacted to specification and trimmed to levels that enable the work that follows. This could be a construction site, a park, or a car park, depending on your project.

Soil Remediation FAQs

Soil remediation refers to the identification of the contaminated soil or soil that requires treatment, management, or removal in order for the soil to be suitable for its intended use.

You might already have an investigation report from an environmental consultant, or the council might ask for the testing as a condition of your development application. Service stations, workshops, landfills, or fill material imported from an unknown source are possible warning signs.

The typical work of the environmental consultant includes leading site investigations and developing the Remediation Action Plan, writing the validation report, and assisting with excavation and soil removal or management.

Contaminated soil is categorised by type and then transported to an approved facility licensed to receive the corresponding type of waste. You will receive documentation for your disposal purposes, as well as to support your validation report.

Remediation may impact the timeline, but having a solid plan in place will ensure that the project keeps chugging along. We coordinate closely with your builder and environmental consultant to ensure the project is completed and your property is cleared as soon as possible.
